My Story Memory: Brent Voce remembers being estatically surprised to see Muddy Waters
1978
I saw many bands at the Gaumont in the 1970's and 80's (Status Quo, Wings, Yes, Rush, Saxon and many more) but one of the most memorable was Eric Clapton on 01 December 1978. It was an excellent performance by E.C. but the support act was a complete surprise. I had "discovered" blues music a few years earlier and was in the early stages of amassing my record collection of American blues artists. Even by 1978 a lot of them had already died but one who was still going strong was Muddy Waters. I presumed I had no chance of ever seeing him live. That night we had no knowledge of who the support act was for Eric Clapton. An unknown band came on stage and played a couple of excellent blues numbers. Then this man walked on stage and introduced himself, "Good evening, my name is Muddy Mississippi Waters".
I'm not too proud to admit - I was in tears.
Will never forget that gig.
It has consistently provided excellent shows over many years.
