In 1983 an inquiry began to determine the fate of Gaumont Theatre. After submitting the petition and numerous letters of support Southampton City Council ruled in favour of saving the Gaumont. The Gaumont Theatre was made a Grade II listed building and bought by Southampton City Council in 1986.
