In the 1980’s Rank Touring Organisation announced plans to turn the theatre into a Bingo Hall. The local community were outraged at the thought of losing the theatre and so the Save The Gaumont Committee was formed. The Committee actively fought against Rank’s plans and created a petition to save the theatre. This petition reached a total of 93,000 signatures before being submitted to Southampton City Council.
