Administrative / Biographical history
The theatre closed for a year in 1986 to undergo a large scale refurbishment. To celebrate the theatre’s new life a public competition was launched to rename the theatre. There were 2,983 entries, with some of the suggestions including the “Sotonian”, “Galaxy” and “Masquerades”! The naming committee decided on Mayflower Theatre to recognise the City’s close association with The Mayflower ship who left Southampton in August 1620.
